There are two ways to go about setting up your Clean Air Compost service:
  1. The first step is to contact Clean Air Compost to set up a meeting at your facility with a Clean Air Compost specialist. During this meeting, a free evaluation of your current waste stream will be conducted. You will have an opportunity to have your questions and concerns addressed and will be provided with a better understanding of the hows and whys of composting. You will be provided with specific suggestions on both internal and external set-up.

You will then receive a proposal, created specifically for your facility, be it a restaurant, school or office with the amount of bins you will need, the frequency of pick- up, the cost, and the estimated amount of trash you will reduce.

Once you decide to move forward with Clean Air Compost, we will provide you with the number of bins you will require and put you on our weekly schedule.

    OR

  2. You can order your Clean Air Compost service over the phone, with just a bit of information about your size and we can estimate the amount of bins, drop them off and begin service right away, adjusting your needs and streamlining the process as we go.
Regardless of the option you choose, you will receive signage for your compost/trash areas as well as clear handouts as to exactly what can and what cannot be put in the compost bins.

Composting Kit Education is an important component for your new Clean Air Compost system to be implemented efficiently so we are happy to provide a free meeting with your employees to help them understand how it works. In schools, we are happy to speak to assemblies or classrooms so the children can participate in the composting effort.

After your service has begun, you will be provided with quarterly reports on your total compost usage by the ton to help you with your organization's tracking and advertise to your community the results your efforts have had.

In addition, Clean Air Compost can also offer suggestions on setting up a recycling system for other materials, such as glass and aluminum with partner, National Recycling.

I already recycle, do I need to separate my food scraps, yard waste, paper products and other compostable materials too?
Yes! According to the EPA rotting food and yard waste in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more potent than CO2. This waste can be transformed into a valuable soil amendment that will be used locally in farming and agriculture, horticulture, landscape restoration, and sustainable development.

I have Oscar the garbage disposal in my kitchen, so why would I need to compost?
Everything you put down your garbage disposal gets mixed in with general sewage where it goes through an energy intensive and expensive treatment process that uses large amounts of chemicals and water. Composting this material puts it back into use.

What if I already have a backyard/home compost system?
Keep it up! Clean Air Compost is a great addition to home composting systems or an alternative for those without the time or space. Large scale composting facilities have the ability to process many materials that you wouldn't place in a home system (i.e. meat, dairy, weeds, cardboard, and pet waste). Home compost systems also get overloaded which slows down the process, so Clean Air Compost can take the overflow and keep it out of the landfill. We encourage residents to continue with home composting (the Clean Air staff loves those worms). Check out this website from worm expert, Mary Appelhof

Will my compost bin stink?
Keep in mind that everything you put in your Clean Air Compost bin would be going in your trash bin, so you already know what it smells like. We recommend using a small kitchen collection container on the counter or under the sink and dumping that into your Clean Air Compost bin outside (or in the garage). Making sure you have your compost bin out for weekly pick up should keep the smell under control.

I didn't even know a service like this existed. Is this a new concept?
We would like to take credit for this great idea, but large scale composting has actually been used as a method of waste diversion for over two decades. Due to limited landfill space and increased sustainability efforts many cities and counties across the country took heed from farmers that were composting manure and developed large scale composting facilities to process a greater variety of the municipal solid waste stream. You mean I have to pay for this service?
In Colorado, current tipping fees at a composting facility that accepts all material types are several times the cost of tipping fees at a landfill. Sometimes it costs a little extra green to be green. The good news is that composting and recycling will significantly reduce the amount of trash that your household generates so you may be able to save money by using your trash company's ‘pay as you throw' trash and recycling option.
